dog_food_best It’s no secret that dogs like to play. They love to run after a ball or stick, jump up in the air to catch a Frisbee, or leap into your lap for some affection. Because dogs use so much energy each day doing what they do best, they need great, nutritious food. An abundance of energy isn’t the only important thing necessary for good dog health, either. There are lots of nutrients that support dental health, immune system and other important bodily functions that dogs need to look and feel optimal.

Sparkling White Teeth

Not all dogs are lucky enough (or have owners with enough time or patience) to have their teeth brushed regularly. As a result, oral care dog food can be an ideal supplement to make sure your furry buddy has nice clean chompers. Many dog foods are formulated especially for dental health. Some good indicators of dentally oriented food (besides the label) are “X” shaped kibble bits, a crunchy texture and the mineral copper. Minerals protect teeth from gum disease, an affliction that 4 out of 5 adult dogs develop in their lifetime. Crunchy, “X” shaped food is good for removing tartar down to the gum line. Different dental sticks and treats can also be a good way to make sure your dog gets proper tooth care.

A Shiny, Soft Coat

One indicator of good health is a glossy, smooth coat on your dog. Some nutrients that promote healthy fur and skin are: biotin, linoleic acid, zinc and proteins. The best dog foods should contain these ingredients, because healthy fur and skin are important barriers against germs, dirt and bacteria. Supple, well-hydrated skin and thick, shiny fur ensure that your dog can pounce on, roll over and run through anything his little heart long as you don’t catch him first!

Good Digestion & A Healthy Weight

It’s important that your dog’s digestive tract works efficiently. Specially formulated digestion and diet dog food can help with this considerably.  Belly-healthy foods are formulated with lots of fiber (often in the form of vegetable protein) for a nutrient-absorbing belly and regular, healthy poops. If your dog has an efficient digestive tract and regular waste elimination, it’s easier for him to maintain a healthy weight, too.

Ideal Immune Function

Healthy immune systems prevent your dog from having to visit the vet. The best foods are formulated with zinc and vitamins B, E, and C to ward off sickness and keep up your dog’s resistance against germs. In addition to lots of lean protein, finding a food with a balance of vitamins and minerals, a crunchy texture and other supplements can ensure that your pet’s entire body functions ideally for years of energy and good health.
