Tips on how to make a move to a new home go smoothly with proper planning and forethought.
So, you're taking the plunge and moving into a new home. The prospect of relocating your life into a whole new location is a daunting one, but, with some planning and good time management, the task is not insurmountable.
Some Tips To Make The Move More Manageable:
Label Everything - There is nothing worse than arriving at a new location and trying to figure out where certain boxes and items belong. Labeling everything keeps you organized and makes life much easier when it comes time to unpack. This is doubly important if you have friends helping you move. They'll be able to unload things into the right spots in your new house much easier if they don't have to constantly ask you where something should go.
Get Plenty of Boxes and Don't Pay For Them - Retail stores will often have unwanted boxes from shipments that would normally be thrown away. Asking around at a few places can save you a nice chunk of change over buying packing boxes. Asking friends or family that may have moved recently for any boxes they may still have is another source for free packing ware. In addition, while packing peanuts work well to keep items secure, something as simple as newspaper provides a great material to pack dishes and glassware in. See who has old newspapers lying around and gather up as much as you can.
Leave Plenty Of Time - When getting packed, start as early as is practical. You don't want to have half a house to still pack away the night before the big move. Get everything you don't need to use in the next couple weeks packed away and only keep out your essentials.
Get Help - Whether friends and family or professional movers, having help is indispensable in a move. If you do have friends helping, be sure to buy them lunch or dinner and provide plenty of cold beverages while they are moving things to show your appreciation.
Have the Vehicles To Make the Move Happen - Whether you're moving across town or across country, make sure to have ample vehicle space to get everything over. While having a couple of your friend's pickup trucks may work for across town moves where you can easily make multiple trips, larger moves may require the use of a rental vehicle with ample storage space. Research and budget in the travel distance that you'll have to pay for to avoid a nasty surprise bill.
This list is by no means exhaustive, but it should give a homeowner some steps that will help their move go a bit more smoothly.
