Leaving your friend’s barbeque, you make your way to the area in which you had parked your bike; only your precious motorcycle is nowhere to be found. Maybe this scene is one you’ve experienced first-hand, or perhaps it’s only one of your fears as a rider. Motorcycle theft is a common problem among bike owners, but luckily there are precautions that you can take to protect yourself and your bike from thieves and vandals.
1. Get an audible vehicle alarm.
Although sometimes irritating, motorcycle alarms are one of the premiere defenses you can employ to discourage your bike from being stolen. Whether at home or in a public place, your motorcycle instantly becomes less of a target when it is equipped with an audible alarm.
2. Park Safe
If you’re going to an event with your bike, always try to park it in an area where you can clearly view it from the venue. When this is not possible, or you are not going to be staying where your bike is parked, do your best to find a security camera that you can park your bike underneath. Career criminals know not to conduct their business in plain view of either witnesses or surveillance cameras.
3. Lock Your Motorcycle
When parked, a bike is far less likely to be taken if it requires extra effort to remove. If your bike is chained to either other motorcycles, or something difficult to cut through or decimate, it will discourage burglars from bothering with it.
4. Keep Your Credentials
Never leave the insurance papers, card, or proof of ownership in your motorcycle when it’s parked. Keep these details on your person at all times. It’s also a great idea to have a photograph in your wallet or on your cell phone to identify your motorcycle to police in case of an incident.
5. Get Extensive Theft Insurance
The most effective way to guard against motorcycle theft is to have valid, extensive coverage in case of theft. If your motorcycle is stolen, it is incredibly heartbreaking to not have the funds to replace it, or repair inflicted damage. That’s why it’s necessary to ensure you’ve purchased proper vehicular insurance to aid you in those difficult situations that are beyond your control.
Preventing motorcycle theft takes a little more thought and planning, but offers amazing comfort to the motorcycle owner who can rest assured he’s taken every precaution against motorcycle theft.
