If you are building a new house, make it a point to install energy efficient windows. They will be a bit more expensive but will save you a lot of money in the long run. However, when you choose them you need to consider different kind of ratings on which they are being rated. Also try to choose the window frames that allow better heat insulation. When you install the right windows the right way, your energy bills are going to come down drastically. It is believed that when you install the correct energy efficient windows you will be able to reduce your energy bills by up to 15%.
Through windows your loss could be enhanced by three ways.
- Through non solar heat transfer
- Solar heat transfer
- Through air flow.
Non solar heat transfer
If your house is not fitted with energy efficient windows you could feel that non solar heat is transferring into the house on a warm day even if you cannot see the sun. When you touch the window pane you will find that it is heated through the environmental temperature. If there is a curtain covering your glass window, you will find that the temperature of air between the window pane and the curtain is higher than the rest of the room. This heat has to be absorbed by your air conditioner and your energy bill will go up. This is due to non solar heat transfer. In science it is called heat conduction.
Solar heat transfer
In case you have not installed energy efficient windows if you don’t keep away the sunlight with curtains the heat from the sun will heat up your house. This is sun’s heat that comes to earth through radiation. This is called solar energy. Even if you cover the sunlight with a curtain, it helps only a little as the window pane, the air layer between window pane and the curtain and the curtain itself are all heated through solar energy. Your air conditioner has to run throughout in order to absorb all the heat transferred through solar energy causing you to spend more on cooling the house. In case you install energy efficient windows you could save all that money as they will not allow heat to come into the house.
Airflow will take place between inside and outside the house in case there are gaps between the windows and the window frames. Windows that have one side fastened to the frame with hinges which are also called the casement windows are the most efficient ones in this context. They seal properly and will not allow any air transfer. Sliding windows in contrast always need some space for easy opening and closing thereby providing space for air transfer. When you install energy efficient windows you need to draw your attention on this aspect also.
When you consider the above facts and choose the right bills you have the possibility of saving on your energy bills. Since even on a warm day you are able to have your curtains open they will add to the illumination of the house also.
