There are many ads online that promises you BIG for SMALL sum when it comes to webhosting. When I started out to blog in 2007 and operated some sites using Wordpress, I was convinced by some really good customer service (sells) agents that their cheap unlimited hosting hosting services were the right one for me. However, the $2/month below hosting companies I used never lived up to their promises.
First, their plans were never really “Unlimited”, so my site was always down almost every hour. The worst part was they gave me only limited access to the CPanel leaving me handicapped in deciding what I do with my domain and the database.
So, I was bitten twice and for the third time I dare to be different. I choose one of the biggest hosting companies called GoDaddy.com and bought their ‘shared’ Economy Plan for $5.99 /month. Since then, I have never had any issues like “down time” with my hosting… As far as I can remember one of my sites hosted on GoDaddy had no issues except when there are over 1800 visitors online at a time.
I will mention another reason why I will never put complete trust in webhosting companies that offers ‘Unlimited Space” and “Unlimited Bandwidth” for $1 or less per month. When your database is relatively small these cheap hosting companies will have no problem with you but as you go about building your site and the data pile up over the years and with more visitors you'll feel the heat when they will make silly excuses to ban your account. Sometimes, they will never let you recover all the hard earned data you have collected.
Recently, we started a new website called AskOfficers.com and we did an indepth research on Bluehost and Hostgator. Rememer, GoDaddy is still going strong but we want better features like “Unlimited Space”, “Unlimited Bandwidth” , Reliable Customer Service, etc. Finally, we picked Bluehost because it offers us 1 free domain for life (i.e. as long as our site is hosted with them), reliable hosting with real 99.99 uptime, easy to use cPanel, readymade scripts and great customer service. The current rate was $6.95/m but we got it at $3.95/m.
Experience with Bluehost so far:- I had reservations about installing Wordpress or phpBB3 forum because all the technical details like uploading Wordpress, the theme, settings, etc were taken care of by one of my cousins and friends. This time I decided to try out on my own and to my amazement, Bluehost is so simple you can actually have your website activated in 3-5 minutes after registering your domain! I also installed a phpBB3 forum, which is the first for me, in few minutes. The simple tutorials on FAQs were good enough to take care of all my doubts. Once I could not figure out some issues from the tutorials, I chat live with one of their tech service executive….He was smart and solved my doubts. Now, I feel more confident and at ease effecting changes on this new site as I know their customer care service people are not only reachable 24x7 but smart to solve issues in few minutes.
Now that I have talked about my experience… I’m sure starters will become wiser by investing a little extra by taking hosting service plans from $3/m and above in order to be safe then waiting for disaster to happen.
