googleIf you plan on building a career in IT, or want to encourage your kids to enter this very lucrative industry, then Google is probably at the top of your list of dream employers. Since it first started taking over the world, Google has had a reputation for treating its employees astoundingly well. At first there were rumours of the incredible perks; the restaurants, scooters, indoor slides and dogs at work. Then the rumours proved to be true and the numbers of people signing up for IT courses surged.
Every year Fortune Magazine publishes a lost of the 100 Best Companies to Work For and for several years now Google has been within the top five. Aside from the prestige of working at Google, what other factors make people send in the CVs in droves?

  • Clean energy focus

Google is famously environmentally friendly. It’s invested nigh on $1 billion in renewable energy initiatives and green projects, especially those that involve solar energy. Solar panels adorn its car parks and help power its shuttle buses, which it uses to ferry staff to and from train stations. In this way Google encourages staff to eschew private transport. It offers cash-back incentives for staff to buy hybrid or electric vehicles and boasts several solar powered EV charging stations. It provides bicycles for employees to ride around the campus. The list is almost endless.

  • Flexible hours

One of things all Googlers say is that the company is less concerned with the number of hours clocked than with projects completed and quality performance. Employers have the option to work from home if they so choose. New moms can get up to six months maternity leave and fathers get one month paternity leave. If parents need to bring their kids to work for any reason that is not a problem. It’s also not a problem if moms and dads have to stay home with sick kids. It’s parents’ idea of paradise.

  • Man’s best friend

One of the best perks has to be that Googlers are allowed to bring their dogs to work. Dogs must be trained, of course. Co-workers don’t particularly want to encounter landmines in the hall, but so long as they are well behaved canines are more than welcome. This is particularly comforting for people whose dogs are ill and need looking after or who have a bit of separation of anxiety.

  • Beauty therapy

Google’s bigger campuses have hair salons, massage therapists, gyms and personal trainers to keep Googlers looking and feeling their best.

  • Fine dining

Yep, Google likes to keep its people well fed. Not only is there ample food but the food available is of the highest quality. Oh, you can get your burgers and fries but you’ll also get organic fruit and veg, vegetarian dishes, kosher and halaal food and delectable baked goodies.

  • Altruism

If you’re of an altruistic bent then you’ll appreciate Google’s Gift Matching programme. Basically, if you donate to a charity on Google’s approved list, Google will match your contribution.
