I love to surf the internet and do a lot of research on various issues. When I first started using the internet, in the mid 90s, a search on some subject will lead us to so many unrelated links and websites. Those days have passed and they are now history, thanks to Wikipedia, the online storehouse of knowledge started by Jimmy Wales. Now, if I just enter “Barack Obama” on the search engines, I get a reliable information right at the top of search engines via Wikipedia.
You may well remember that Wikipedia is still and likely to remain Ads free unlike most knowledge database websites. And, now with over 400 million unique users and 6 billion page views a month the cost of running the portal must have skyrocketed to billions of dollars.
I’ll just mention the facts Wikipedia has put up about the website for you.
Google might have close to a million servers. Yahoo has something like 13,000 staff. We have 679 servers and 95 staff.
Wikipedia is the #5 site on the web and serves 450 million different people every month – with billions of page views.
Commerce is fine. Advertising is not evil. But it doesn't belong here. Not in Wikipedia.
Wikipedia is something special. It is like a library or a public park. It is like a temple for the mind. It is a place we can all go to think, to learn, to share our knowledge with others.
Then how is Wikipedia is surviving? DONATIONS. I know the cost of webhosting, having several websites myself. It can run into thousands of rupees (in India). So, if you and I can help Wikipedia with say a dollar or any amount it be of great help.
Know this: If Wikipedia was to place even a single block of AdSense ad on the website they would make over $100 million a year. But what keeps them from not doing is that people get reliable information from a ‘clean’ and ‘friendly’ web interface so that they are not disturbed or distracted by attractive ads.
Want to Donate? YES? Go this this and Give Now.
(Have I donated? Yes, in a way or two)
