Just when you thought that the motion control and scroll wheel functions made LG’s Magic Remote a one-of-a-kind TV interface, the company takes things a step further with sophisticated voice integration.
By “sophisticated voice integration,” I don’t just mean that you can tell your LG TV to change channels or adjust the volume. I mean that the next time you want something to watch, you’ll be able to get specific results or a list of viewing choices simply by calling out some details for the Smart TV to work with; part of a title, or an actor, director, even a general genre description.

“Please find me something scary with Natalie Portman. What’s that, Magic Remote? As a matter of fact, I have been meaning to see Black Swan for some time. Thanks so much!” Disclaimer: there’s really no need to be this polite. It may be a Smart TV, but it’s not a stickler for etiquette.

But even all of this is only the beginning.

The Magic Remote allows you to use your voice to surf and search the Internet, to log in and post updates to your social media accounts, or to interact in countless other ways with any of LG’s 1,000+ apps from names such as Google and Adobe. Perhaps you’d like to see the trailer on YouTube first, and double-check with your social media contacts to see if the movie is right for you? All of this can be done with nothing but your voice and an LG Smart TV.

The Magic Remote and app system make the LG Smart TV line into a versatile and user-friendly portal. You can expect the same range of experience that you would get with a cutting-edge Home Theater PC, a game console, and your trusty smartphone companion. As we’ve already seen, the motion control puts the Smart TV in the same realm as the Nintendo Wii or Kinect-enabled Xbox 360. The scroll wheel and point-and-click functions give you the control and accessibility of an Internet-connected PC.

Futuristic? Definitely, but this is not a ‘concept,’ nor even at some point in the Research and Development stage. Full voice control capabilities are set to roll out at the end of April for immediate use on new and existing models of LG’s Smart Televisions.

The next chapter of my Smart TV coverage may very well be dictated into a Magic Remote, transcribed automatically into an app, published directly to the Internet, and shared through my social media circles all without leaving the LG Smart TV environment. How cool is that?
