A Facebook fan page can be an excellent way to market your business. However, there have been a number of changes to the rules for using this marketing method. Whether it's how you display your contact information or the way you run giveaways, you need to pay attention to these rules or you could get banned from Facebook. Here are just a few Facebook fan page rules you need to be aware of.
No Contact Information on the Cover Image
The Facebook fan page rules prohibit you from adding contact information to cover photos. This includes website addresses, phone numbers, etc. You also cannot use ads in your cover image. For example, you cannot have a cover image that says, "50% off summer fashion". This can be hard to deal with, but you need to list your contact information in the About section in order to meet the rules.
Only Representatives or the Personality Can Run Fan Pages
You cannot put up a fan page making it look like you are the person or company unless you are a representative of the company or the person the fan page is devoted to. The only exception is if you create a page that specifics that it is not affiliated with that company or business. This helps prevent customers from being ripped off and from information being used in fraudulent ways.
Ads Must Meet the Advertisement Guidelines
There are a number of important guidelines when it comes to advertising. As stated above, you cannot advertise on your cover image. You also cannot use false advertising. You also must tell users how information that is collected will be used. In other words, you need to follow all the same rules you would on any other website. Chances are, if you're meeting the FTC guidelines, you're meeting the Facebook fan page guidelines.
Giveaways Must Use a Third-Party Application
Last, but not least, you must use a third-party application in order to run giveaways. This helps protect you and Facebook from customers who feel you misled them or rigged the giveaway. There are a number of free applications you can use that are easy to add to your fan page, but one of the most popular is Rafflecopter.
Facebook has created many new rules for fan pages and unless you follow them precisely, you could be banned from Facebook. This means you need to take the time to read everything not once, but twice so that you make sure you are following the rules. Thankfully though, these rules aren't impossible to follow and can actually protect you from some lawsuits.
