scammed The world is a cruel place, full of Internet-savvy people who will scam you for your money, identity, privacy, and more. In order to get ahead and make sure you never get scammed, here are a few tips. Remember, it's better to be safe than sorry.

1. By Email

An email responding to an ad you posted not too long ago with excellent grammar sounds legit, right? It might not be.

Before you click on the link they'll almost assuredly provide, or give out information or signatures that could end with you losing your identity, research the people that are sending you the email. First, see if the name they might leave at the end matches with the name within the email address. Second, remember how long ago it was that you sent out the ad, or signed onto a specific website. If it was more than a few days, you know something's up. Finally, read over the email again to see if they actually mentioned your ad or the website you signed up to. If they didn't, something's obviously wrong.

Research the link that they provide for you by just Googling it. This will instantly allow you to see reviews about whether or not the link is a scam. If it had all the problems it stated above, then it probably is.

2. When Buying or Selling

Selling and buying items online can be a tricky process, especially since virtually everyone on the Internet is a complete stranger to you, and you won't know whether you can actually trust them or not.

The first step is to get to know the buyer or seller. Ask them some information about themselves, just so you know that they're human and trustworthy. Let them know that this is your reason, and  you don't mean to get too personal with them. After all, you don't want to make them think that you're scamming them!

The second step is to make sure that what they're buying or selling actually sounds realistic, rather than too good to be true. This is usually how online scams work - they tinker with people's needs and wants and give them a hope that they're being offered something within their dreams. Don't be scammed so easily - be logical and make sure that what they're buying or selling actually makes sense.

The final step is to actually research the buyer or seller. If you Google them, and red flags fly across the page stating that they're scammers, then it's obvious that you know you're not going to be buying or selling from them. The most important thing when it comes to buying and selling online is to just be smart and use common sense - don't let your emotions or wants get in the way of reality.

3. Through Craigslist

Craigslist has a lot of big-time opportunities - and a lot of big-time scammers. It's important to read the guidelines when it comes to Craigslist, because they actually do help you decide whether or not you're dealing with a scam.

For instance, one of the rules of Craigslist is to "never wire funds via Western Union, Moneygram, or any other wire service." This rule is in place because people offer you money if you wire the rest of the check that they send you to another place. What happens is that since the money in the check doesn't actually exist, the money is taken straight from your bank account - and you could lose a few thousand dollars, or even more.

It's important to read over any Craigslist offer carefully, no matter what you're looking for on Craigslist. Just be smart and don't let your wants get the best of you, as stated previously above.

In today's world, it's easy to get scammed online. By using the tips above for virtually any online problem you can be a few steps ahead of the scammer. Be smart, use your knowledge, and you'll never be scammed again.
