There were over 110 million smartphones in use in the United States in August 2012. As mobile devices continue to become an ever increasing part of our daily lives, they become a more tempting target for hackers and online thieves. Smartphones are becoming an especially tempting target. Over the years, people have become used to routinely using their computers to conduct financial transactions online, and they are now being enticed to do the same things with their smartphones.

Unfortunately, it is estimated that 95% of the smartphones in use do not have adequate security software installed. Although most users are security savvy enough not to attempt online banking on a computer without security software installed, many users have not yet made the connection that they need to make sure their smartphones are protected as well. There are many security software packages available for smartphones, and they all have varying features. Some of those features are good, and some of those features are just bells and whistles that do very little to protect your smartphone. As a minimum, there are 6 features you should insure any security software package has before you buy and install it on your smartphone.

1)     Antivirus Software – All the major security software packages have this, but you need to verify the software has options for automatic updates, scheduled scans, the ability to scan on demand, and the capability to scan applications while they are being downloaded and before they are installed.

2)     Remote Lock and Remote Wipe – These two features are similar, and they both prove their worth if your smartphone is lost or stolen. Remote lock allows you to use another mobile device to send a code to your phone to prevent it from being used without a pass code. In more extreme cases, you can send a code to your computer to activate the remote wipe feature which will completely wipe out the data on your phone.

3)     Locate My Phone – Most new smartphones have a GPS tracker device installed. You should insure your security software has a method for remotely activating your phone’s GPS tracker to assist you in locating your phone.

4)     Anti-spam and Anti-spyware – Security experts warn that text spam will become as prevalent as email spam in the years ahead.

5)     Device Scream – This feature allows users to remotely command their smartphone to emit a loud wailing or even a human screaming noise. This concept is similar to car alarms in that thieves will become extremely conspicuous when the alarm is activated, and hopefully they will drop your phone where it can be recovered.

6)     User Friendly Interface – Even the best security software will fall short if it is too hard to use. An easy to use and simple control panel is mandatory on any security software you consider.
The smartphone is fast becoming an indispensible tool for the average citizen. Whether you use your smartphone for talking, texting, browsing, researching, buying, banking, or just playing games, your smartphone is vulnerable without a good security software package installed and correctly setup. Hackers and thieves will target unprotected mobile devices. You can prevent them from targeting your smartphone by installing security software to lock them out.
