What is a Data Warehouse?

While there are a lot of definitions for Data Warehouse, in a layman’s language a Data Warehouse also abbreviated as DW is a collection of data maintained to support management decision making. It a relational database designed for query and analysis rather than transactional processing. What it really means is that the DW stores current as well as historical data which is used by senior management for creating monthly or annual reports or to make performance comparisons.  While data warehousing as a concept focuses more on data storage, the methods employed to retrieve and analyze data, to extract, transform and load data are also now accepted as an important part of the data warehousing system.

Making a career in data warehousing requires specialist knowledge of data storage and analysis. If you have applied to a job in data warehousing better be prepared with a good understanding of modelling philosophies and warehouse development lifecycles. Starting out as a database developer is the perfect platform for pursuing a career in data warehousing. Building data warehouses is like designing de-normalize databases. Data warehousing architects have to extract and aggregate data from multiple relational databases, therefore, the first pre-requisite to becoming a data warehousing architect is to learn database development. This is the reason that there are so less fresher data warehousing jobs available in the market. 

Technical Skills required for Data Warehouse Architects

Data Modeling:  Design and Implementation of data models is required for both the integration and presentation repositories. 

Data Cleansing: Data Quality issues can arise from merging of data from multiple resources. Therefore, data hygiene is an important aspect that requires special skills

Application Development: An easy to use graphical user interface for accessing the data warehouse is required. The front end should be equipped with comprehensive analytical capabilities, and modelled to user’s preferences.  This requires some degree of programming skills for applying commercial application customization.      

Database administration: A data warehouse architect should possess skills that are held by a network administrator and database administrator. This will help them in understanding the complications associated with moving large quantum of data across the network. 

Besides the technical aptitude a data warehouse architect is supposed to have an inquisitive mind along with leadership abilities. The ability to abstract general principles form specifics along with excellent communication and presentation skills also play an important role in data warehousing jobs.

Data Warehousing has emerged as a superb career choice to make in recent years, thanks to rise of Big Data analytics. There are tonnes of jobs for the qualified and experienced candidates that are willing to pay handsomely.  With good hands on experience on specific data warehousing products you can become a hot commodity in the recruitment market. With the passage of time, as organizations grow in size, these firms are bound to experience issues with storage of the humongous amounts of collected data. To avoid such issues, the companies are now focusing on augmenting data warehouses for highest level of performance.  Every organization wants to perform better than its competitor and therefore has its focus on making every process more efficient and productive while increasing profit margins.
